Staff members give support to local charity Firefly

Our staff have chosen local cancer awareness and support charity Firefly as the organisation they will raise money for throughout 2020.

Each year we use dress down days and other events to raise money for a local charity chosen by our staff members. Last year we raised around £3,000 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The extra support being offered is certainly coming at the right time for Firefly. The charity provide free transport to local cancer patients and their families so they can attend treatments and hospital appointments. Firefly would usually help between 70-80 patients every day, but the current coronavirus outbreak is causing them some difficulties.

Director of Firefly Cancer Awareness and Support, Ian Bacchus, said:

“We are keeping a full service and running all eight of our vehicles but we now have a maximum of just four people per vehicle in order to keep to the social distancing rules. Our vehicles have all the safety measures implemented and we can guarantee a sanitised environment in the vehicles with internal detergent, hand gel and face masks all being used.

“We are having to run the service with fewer drivers at the moment as well. 40 of our drivers are self-isolating, and a further six are key workers in other fields, so that just leaves us with 25 drivers to get patients to their treatments.

“The biggest issue however is the funding as all charity events have either been cancelled or postponed for the foreseeable future. The majority of our funding comes from these events and we no longer have those – we also can’t receive our regular funding donations from the pubs, clubs and Working Men’s Clubs in Doncaster anymore due to the current situation.”

Paul Tanney, Chief Executive of St Leger Homes, said:

“I am delighted that our staff are once again going out of their way to support local charities and help others in the community.

“Firefly have been providing an immensely important service for the people of Doncaster and the surrounding area since 2006 and I am proud that we are able to give them our support.

“If you would like to support the work that Firefly do at this challenging time, you can make a donation via PayPal at”
