Owen Cooper, an apprentice in the St Leger Homes Gas Team, has been named Apprentice of the Year at the Doncaster Business Awards.
Owen won the award at the virtual ceremony on Friday 12th March for his work supporting the local community and particularly going the extra mile for customers in need.
Owen has shown incredible dedication and professionalism – whether fixing the boiler of a vulnerable resident during winter, engaging with someone who is socially isolated or being aware of safeguarding issues when in a property – the actions taken by Owen have helped to improve outcomes for some of the most in need residents in the borough.
Since 2005, St Leger Homes have trained over 111 trades apprentices – with over 96% of those who completed their placement getting jobs locally, and many staying working within St Leger Homes. Alongside this, the local housing provider, who manages over 20,000 homes for Doncaster Council, also offers office-based apprenticeships, including opportunities in Business Administration, Customer Service, IT and HR.
Dave Richmond, Chief Executive of St Leger Homes, said:
“We are all really pleased for Owen – this award is fully deserved, and he is a fantastic ambassador for St Leger Homes. Owen is conscientious, hard working and a real team player, eager to learn and help those around him who are in need.
“We are really proud of the role we play as part of the Doncaster Council family of wholly owned companies in supporting the local community, and particularly the way that our apprenticeship scheme helps support and enable young people from across Doncaster to improve their own personal academic and career development. Owen really personifies that in the way he has applied himself to his practical on-the-job learning, as well as his college studies, displaying a really strong work ethic whilst putting the needs of the customer first at all times.
“We believe our apprentice scheme sets a high standard for others to follow helping make a difference in the lives of local residents and the wider Doncaster area, as well as bringing real improvements for those participating in the scheme. That has been seen more than ever over the last 12 months with the important role our trades operatives have played supporting local communities through the coronavirus pandemic.
“Today we are launching our new trade apprentice opportunities, which will begin in September – why not be inspired by Owen and apply to join the St Leger Homes team making a positive difference in local communities across Doncaster. Jordan Simpkin, Gas Team Leader, said:
“Throughout our apprenticeship programme, Owen has shown a high level of enthusiasm and commitment to all elements of his work – both practical and theory. He is keen to learn new skills and always gives his all. Every professional involved in Owen’s journey are of the same opinion regarding his outstanding practice and attitude.
“Alongside the professionalism and work ethic that he displays, it should be noted that Owen is also a genuinely kind, decent and courteous person, who we are proud to have as part of our team. I believe that Owen will be successful in whatever path he chooses, and that he will soon be the mentor of future apprentices.”
Owen Cooper, Apprentice Gas Fitter, said:
“I'm very thankful for even being nominated for the award, and even more so for winning it. St Leger Homes have provided immense support and training throughout my apprenticeship journey, which I am very grateful for. I am really proud to win this award and to be playing my part helping the local community.”
