St Leger Homes has today become the first housing provider in the UK to formally sign up to the MND Charter. The MND Charter sets out how the organisation will give support to people living with motor neurone disease (MND).

St Leger Homes manages over 20,000 homes across the Doncaster borough on behalf of Doncaster Council – and is committed to listening to the views and experiences of its tenants to provide better services.

The MND Charter has five key aims that will make a positive difference for both people living with MND and their carers.

The Charter states people should have the right to:

1.      Early diagnosis and information

2.      Access quality care and treatments

3.      Be treated as individuals and with dignity and respect

4.      Maximise their quality of life

5.      For carers to be valued, respected, listened to and well-supported.

Valerie Wood, from the Doncaster branch of the South Yorkshire MND Association, whose husband, Les, has MND, said:

“The Charter should improve things for people living with MND. For example, currently the assessments of people's health and social care needs cannot be fully completed or understood until they have received a diagnosis, and this is something that unfortunately can take a long time.

“I’m really pleased St Leger Homes have signed up to the MND Charter. If authorities and organisations sign up we can make sure people receive the right help and support at the right time and hopefully secure better outcomes for people living with MND.”

Signing the MND Charter, Paul Tanney, Chief Executive of St Leger Homes, said:

“As a company we always want to put our tenants and their experiences at the heart of our work. We want to provide excellent local services that are tailored to people’s individual needs wherever possible.

“I’m delighted to be signing this MND Charter today on behalf of St Leger Homes. We want to send a strong message out so that people with MND, and their carers, know they will always be valued, respected, listened to and well-supported by us as their landlord.”
