The annual Housing Heroes awards shine the spotlight on the ‘unsung heroes’ of the housing sectors and this year they have honoured one of our stars – Marie Caygill.
At a national ceremony which preludes the 2016 Housing Conference at the Exchange Hall, Manchester, hosted by the broadcaster, author and former MP Gyles Brandreth, Marie was named Inspirational Tenant of the Year – an award made all the more poignant by her death from cancer earlier this year.
She was nominated for her work in supporting cancer sufferers in the borough. Her legacy lives on through the group she formed which continues her work in the community. Throughout her illness she was supported by her husband Gordon and son Sam, who were at the ceremony to receive the award on her behalf.
Jane Davies, Head of Customer Focus, said: “We are all absolutely delighted that Marie’s hard work, dedication and courage have been recognised in this way. Marie was a wonderful person and a real credit to her family and to Doncaster. She will be very sorely missed.”
Also on the honours board were Jenny Hobson from Doncaster HomeChoice and Joe Bermingham from World of Work who were both shortlisted as Mentor of the Year for their fantastic work in mentoring and developing people.
The event, organised by Inside Housing, attracted 100s of entries from all over the country and included among its guests at the awards ceremony housing industry figureheads, leading trade associations and government representatives.
