As a public sector employer, we are required to annually publish our performance around apprenticeships – comparing these results against our public sector target.

We are proud to offer a wide range of opportunities through our apprenticeship scheme throughout the year, in both trades and office based roles, to people living across Doncaster. People of all ages and backgrounds are welcome to apply.

Since 2005 our annual apprenticeship programme has trained around 100 people from the local area. The comprehensive training we offer has led to 97% of our former apprentices going on to secure full time employment with us.

St Leger Homes – Public Sector Apprenticeship Target

The public sector apprenticeships target was introduced by government in April 2017. This sets a clear target for any public sector employer with at least 250 employees to employ an average of 2.3% of their staff as new apprentice ‘starts’ between 1 April 2017 and March 2021.

All public sector organisations must report annually, to the Department for Education (DfE) on progress made towards meeting this target. The target is for new apprenticeship ‘starts’, which include newly recruited apprentices and any existing employees that have started an apprenticeship during the reporting period.

In addition to submitting the figures, we need to demonstrate how we are making planning decisions relating to our workforce and how we are actively considering apprenticeships (either as new recruits or as part of career development for staff).

St Leger Homes’ progress toward meeting the public sector target for 2017/2018:

The percentage of apprenticeship starts (both new hires and existing employees who started an apprenticeship) as a proportion of employment starts between 1 April 2017 and 31 March 2018 was 11.24%.

The percentage of total headcount of employees that were apprentices on 31 March 2018 was 3.26%.

The percentage of apprenticeship starts (both new hires and existing employees who started an apprenticeship) between 1 April 2017 to 431 March 2018 as a proportion of total headcount on 31 March 2018 was 1.24%.

Actions towards meeting our apprenticeship target in the future:

St Leger Homes already has a long-standing commitment to delivering high-quality apprenticeships. We offer a range of apprenticeships, from NVQ Level 2, through to professional degree level apprenticeships. We run a number of apprenticeships within our trades teams, which include electricians, gas, plumbing, roofing and bricklaying. We also run office-based apprenticeships in areas such as HR, Finance, Housing Support, Homelessness, Income Management, Tenancy Sustainability and Executive Support.

We endeavour to support apprentices within the business. Here are some of the specific actions we are taking:

  • We continue to work closely with senior managers to raise awareness of the potential benefits of apprenticeships, both for new and existing employees, including ‘growing our own’ to aid succession planning.
  • We promote higher level apprenticeships within the business and across our local communities supporting skills development, as part of our continued commitment to ‘Doncaster Growing Together’.
  • We continue to share our apprentice opportunities widely to school and college leavers, as well as those seeking a change in employment and returners to work, as part of our World of Work Academy.

We are committed to improving and extending our apprenticeships wherever possible – offering opportunities that can turn into great careers to people of all ages living in Doncaster. We are also committed to updating our tenants on our performance every year so they can see the progress we are making.
