St Leger Homes of Doncaster have this week handed over the keys to a property which should allow a homeless ex-forces veteran to move in to a new home before Remembrance Day.

The property is part of new initiative to provide homes for ex-armed forces personnel in Doncaster who are either homeless or living in poor quality accommodation.

St Leger Homes and Doncaster Council have partnered with the Barnsley based charity ‘Help 4 Homeless Veterans’ in order to offer this life changing opportunity. Initially up to 10 one and two bedroom bungalows will be made available in the west area of Doncaster.

For five years ‘Help 4 Homeless Veterans’ has been helping to find accommodation for veterans, assisting them with tenancy issues, and helping them to access education, training, and employment opportunities. To date the charity has helped more than 200 veterans across the country, but primarily in Barnsley. Extending this scheme into Doncaster means that even more homeless veterans can now benefit, and the move is particularly apt as the charity’s patron is our own local hero, former paratrooper Ben Parkinson MBE.

Steve Bentham-Bates, CEO of Help 4 Homeless Veterans, said:

“I am delighted that  through our scheme with Doncaster Council and St Leger Homes today, we have just taken over our first property which will allow a former veteran to move in in the next few days.

“I want to say a big thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this happen. I hope it will be the first of many homes which will allow homeless veterans or those in serious housing need an opportunity for a safe and secure home locally.”

Susan Jordan, Chief Executive of St Leger Homes, said:

“We are proud to be doing what we can to help rehome former veterans in Doncaster. We recognise that a safe and affordable home is fundamental to an individual’s wellbeing. This first home signals our intention to make a real difference to those in need who have given so much serving our country. This is just the beginning.”
