St Leger Homes of Doncaster

We have delayed the demolition of an old sheltered housing block called Barnburgh House in Edlington to protect bats in the local area.

This means that the building will now be demolished at a later date when it is safe for the bats; we will then grass and maintain the area.

We are demolishing the building because it is an ex-sheltered accommodation block which had low demand and out-of-date facilities. This formed part of a review of all sheltered blocks across Doncaster.

Christine Tolson, Head of Asset Management for St Leger Homes, says: “We recently applied for a licence to remove the bats which was granted, but the weather prohibited us from doing this and it has now moved into the breeding season.

Inevitably this will cause a delay to our plans to ensure the bats safety and may mean we need to wait until the breeding season ends in September/October.

Any work we carry out will then be performed by a licenced ecologist in full accordance with Natural England. Bats are a protected species, and we also want to ensure they come to no harm through our work.”

Update: Demolition work began week beginning 22/08/2016.
