The National and Local Agenda

The Localism Act 2011

Over the past few years there have been many changes within Social Housing and the way it is regulated.  The Localism Act 2011 was introduced which set out a series of measures which moved power away from central government and towards local people and their neighbourhoods.  This was with the aim of increasing more participation and promoting more ownership and pride of the community in which they live.

National Standards

In 2010 a national consultation exercise took place which produced national standards for social housing providers to deliver to.  This forms part of the regulation of social housing within the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The National Standards are divided into 'Economic' and 'Consumer' standards:

  • Value for Money
  • Governance and Financial Viability
  • Rents

 Consumer National Standards cover:

  • Tenant Involvement and Empowerment
  • Home
  • Tenancy
  • Neighbourhood and community
