DIY gas work is against the law – never try to alter or repair a gas appliance yourself.  All work to the gas appliances in your home, even those belonging to you, must be carried out by a competent Gas Safe registered installer.  This also includes equipment associated with gas appliances (pipework, flues and vents etc).

Ceiling Fans

Rotating ceiling fans must never be operated in the same room as working gas appliances.  When in operation, the fans can prevent the flue from working properly and can actually pull dangerous carbon monoxide fumes back into the room.

The fans are perfectly safe if used while the fire is switched off.

Air vents

Never block vents or airbricks.  These may be providing air that is vital for the safe operation of a gas appliance.  Do not block them up on the inside of your home or obstruct them outside with sheds, plants or shrubs etc.

Rooms should have natural ventilation while gas appliances are in operation.

Rooms fitted with a gas fire should not be used as a bedroom

Problems with gas appliances

You will need to take urgent action if you notice any of the following:

Sooty marks or yellow/brown stains around the appliance

Increased condensation in a room with a working gas appliance

An appliance burning with a yellow or orange flame not a blue one

Pilot light frequently going out

If you suspect there are problems with your gas supply or appliances, please contact our Repairs Centre.

Gas Leaks

If you think there may be a gas leak in your home, turn the gas off at the mains if you can and open as many doors and windows as possible to thoroughly ventilate the area.

  • Do not smoke
  • Do not switch lights on or off
  • Do not use a mobile phone
  • Warn your neighbours

Contact TRANSCO immediately on 0800 111 999 from a mobile or call box – DO NOT call from your own home.

A TRANSCO engineer will come out free of charge and disconnect either the faulty appliance or the entire gas supply if necessary.  They will fix the problem straight away wherever possible, or isolate the faulty appliance so that it can’t be used before reconnecting the gas supply.

You will then need to contact our gas section on 01709 858659 to arrange for the appliance to be repaired or contact a GAS SAFE installer if the appliance belongs to you.

Remember to turn off any appliances before the gas supply is reconnected and to relight all the pilot lights.
