Ask for the callers ID – don’t accept any excuses for
them not having any!
Bogus callers will try to talk their way into your home with a
variety of stories; anything from a council officer to a worker for
the water board with a believable explanation for needing to enter
your home.
Before you open the door to any caller, check
to see who it is first by looking through the window or viewer if
you have one, and only open the door when you have the chain
on.
Sneak thieves
Guard against sneak thieves by locking the
back door before opening the front or visa versa, bogus callers
sometimes work in pairs, one caller distracts you whilst their
partner sneaks in the other door.
Identification
All St Leger Homes’ staff and anyone working
on our behalf will carry identification. Please make sure you
have seen this before letting anyone into your home.
If you are in any doubt, take the callers name
and contact any
St Leger office to check their identity - no one will mind or
think you are wasting their time.
Always check the identification of anyone
calling at your home – remember the saying “if in doubt, keep them
out!”
Even when they show you ID, if you’re not
comfortable, check with the callers company – get the telephone
number from the phone directory not off their ID card, it could be
fake
If you are still not comfortable, tell the
caller to come back at another time when you can arrange for
someone else to be there with you.
Password Schemes
Many companies, including St Leger Homes,
operate password schemes – consider joining them.
Report it!
If you do get a suspicious caller, please
report it to the police as soon as you can so that they can warn
other people in the area – your neighbour may not check the
caller’s identity as thoroughly as you did!
Remember, it’s your home and it’s your
right to refuse to let them in
