Asbestos is perfectly safe if it is not disturbed or damaged.  If you do come across it, do not cut it, scrape it or drill into it, or try to sand or chip off the Artex type coatings (see removing Artex/Textured Coatings section).   

If it is damaged in any way, firstly don’t panic.  If possible, it should be repaired and left in place – you will need to get advice on this as soon as possible. 

If it is to be removed, it will have to be disposed of properly - it must never be put in dustbins, skips or rubbish chutes.
